Walters, Melvina Jo “Bina Jo”
A life-long learner and mentor to many, age 92, passed away on Thursday, January 19, 2017 from a massive stroke event. Much heartfelt thanks go to Hidden Lake’s Memory Aperion care staff and her supportive St. Louis based friends: Dot Jenner; Angel Hughes and family and church members over the past eight years as her Alzheimer’s disease slowly took away her independence and health. Bina Jo was born on March 13,1924 in Springfield, Illinois to the late
Melvin and Josephine Refine. She met and married her life-mate of 53
years, John A. Walters, while they both attended and graduated from Eastern Illinois University. Bina Jo is survived by three children: Margaret Kruckemeyer; Linda Maurer; James M. Walters ; Four Grandchildren: Crystal Markfort; Clifford J Maurer; Melody Deweese; Brett Walters; Three great grandsons: Lincoln; Philip; Lawson and half-brother, Jim Refine.
Bina Jo’s friends and family best remember her as a petite, feisty, hard working dedicated mother and teacher. Her passion for learning and sharing of teachable moments found her using her language skills of French, Spanish and English to pursue her interests in history, genealogy, photography, horticulture, and bible studies through taking college credit study tours to Hawaii, Europe, Middle East, Central and South America. Some of her best memories were the times she and John went on singing performance European tours with both UMSL and SIU college choirs. Celebration of Life service will be at John Knox Presbyterian Church, 13200 New Halls Ferry Road, Florrissant, MO 63033 on February 11,[email protected]:00AM with burial to occur out of state at a later time.
