Powell, Joe R., passed away on February 27, 2017 at the age of 87. Devoted husband of 65 years to N. Katherine Powell (DeGraffenreid) ; Loving father of JoAnn Powell, Marilyn (Mark) Rickerson, Becky (Greg) Shockley, and Carol (Dave) Sproat; Loving grandpa of Breanne, Brad, Erica, Brittany, Justin, Gary, Kyle; Loving great-grandpa of eight. Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Harry (Cleora) Powell.
Joe grew up at Lake Ozark and graduated with an Electrical Engineering degree from Rolla School of Mines in 1951. He served in Korea in 1952-53 as a First Lieutenant in the Army in charge of heavy equipment responsible for maintaining roads.
While Joe didn’t consider himself a big traveler, he and Katherine loved their trips to Hawaii on their 25th anniversary and their Alaskan cruise/train trip for their 50th, as well as trips to Florida, New Mexico, North Carolina and New York. Mostly, he was a Christian family man who worked hard to provide well for his family. He loved adventurous family camping trips, boating and spending many nights at Lake of the Ozarks. He played basketball throughout school and loved watching baseball games as well as his grandkids in all their activities. He was able to retire early from Union Electric/Ameren after 30 years. His favorite part of that was “freedom: to do whatever I want whenever I want.. and some days it isn’t much.”.
